Provo, Utah - Snowboarding in Sundance

I call my destination Provo, but it was actually Sundance Ski Resort. It’s in Provo Canyon and it is beautiful place. I see why Robert Redford bought the Stewart Property and why he didn’t develop the area into the typical resort. Rumor has it that when he bought the property that the running advice was to put in hotels and lodges modeled on the profit making operations like Winter Park. Fortunately he ignored the prevailing wisdom and created a wonderful little village.

I started skiing when I was twelve. My parents took me on a ski trip to Italy. I learned how to ski at Livigno, Italy. It’s basically across the ridge and border from the famous Swiss resort at St. Moritz. After that I was hooked.

These days I snowboard. I didn’t like it at first. It seemed as if I was always on my butt. And if I wasn’t on my ass I was up to my thighs in snow with my knees leading the way. After skiing for so long, I guess that I was kind of humiliated by my awkwardness on the board. Luckily that was first day. The second day I was hanging with the pros…

I’ve been to quite a few ski resorts that I’ve enjoyed. My favorite one is Sundance. I plan on returning as soon as I save enough. I’ll return to Sundance in spite of Utah. Sundance was great, but after growing up with NYC’s sensibilities concerning alcohol and bar life, Utah leaves a lot to be desired. If you’re not familiar with blue laws I suggest you find out just how bizarre some places in the country are. When I looked into blue laws I had no idea that Bergen County, NJ, had blue laws. That’s across the Hudson from Inwood, and that’s really close to home.
